Answers for families and friends

01 What is LifeLab Kids?

A nonprofit therapy clinic in Ferndale, Michigan, for children whose difficulties are showing up at school. Our clinicians share one plan across every service a child receives, aimed at the classroom and home. Learn how we work.

02 Do you work with autistic children?

Yes. Many of the children we serve are autistic, and many aren't. What they share is that school has become hard. ABA, speech, OT, feeding therapy and counseling are coordinated in one plan.

03 Which therapies and programs do you offer?

ABA, speech, occupational, physical and feeding therapy; counseling and art therapy; recreational and music therapy; life skills, social groups, pre-vocational services, parent training and summer camp. See all services.

04 What ages do you work with?

Most families come to us when a child of about five to eight is struggling at school. We also work with younger children and teens. Call us and we'll tell you honestly whether we're the right fit.

05 How do we get started?

Schedule a tour or call 248-629-4600. You'll tour the center, meet the team and talk about your child. Then we handle intake with you, check insurance and help gather the reports your plan asks for.

06 What happens on a tour?

You'll see the gym, the park and the rooms where sessions happen, meet clinicians, and ask anything about cost, schedules or how the plan works. There's no commitment.

07 Do you need a doctor's referral or a diagnosis?

Some plans need a diagnosis or prescription before therapy can begin, especially for ABA. Call us at 248-629-4600 and we'll explain exactly what your plan needs.

08 Which insurance plans do you accept?

We accept BCBS, BCN, Cigna and Carelon for many services. Coverage depends on the therapy, so see our insurance page. We do not accept Medicare at this time.

09 Can we pay out of pocket?

Yes. Services other than ABA can be paid out of pocket when coverage isn't available. We'll go through the options with you.

10 Will you help with the paperwork?

Yes. Our team helps you gather the diagnostic reports, referrals and documents your plan asks for, so you don't have to chase them alone.

11 How long is the wait to start?

Outside counseling, the current wait for a first session is about 2 weeks (updated October 2026). Ask us for the current counseling timeline.

12 Do you work with my child's school?

Yes. We're a partner to your school team, not a replacement. With your permission we share goals with teachers and IEP teams, and the plan is aimed at helping your child take part in class.

13 Is LifeLab the right fit for every child?

Our building has cinderblock walls, easy-to-reach windows and stairs, so right now we can't safely serve children with high levels of aggressive or unsafe behavior. That's about our facility, not your child, and we'll help you find a provider who can.

14 Where are you located?

3178 Hilton Rd., Ferndale, MI 48220, in Oakland County.

15 How can I volunteer?

We'd love your help. Fill in the volunteer form and we'll be in touch about opportunities that fit your time and skills.

16 Is my donation tax-deductible?

Yes. LifeLab Kids Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 81-1334117), so donations are tax-deductible as allowed by law. Make a donation.
